When I first started making sourdough, a classic no-knead boule or sandwich bread was my usual go-to.

Over the years, though, my sourdough routine has changed. Of course, I still make bread every week. But now, many of my favorite sourdough recipes aren’t bread.

Sourdough starter is a staple in my kitchen. It’s a flexible and flavorful ingredient that I use to make a variety of meals.

Mornings are often hectic around our house. But what I like about those mornings when I have time to enjoy a sourdough recipe is that it takes me out of the chaos for a moment. And the whole family gathers around to enjoy breakfast rather than rushing out the door.

Some of our favorite mornings start around the table with a warm cup of coffee and a homemade pop tart or scratch-made donut (those recipes are below).

I’m excited to share our family’s favorite sourdough breakfasts with you, and I hope they bring a little extra warmth and joy to your family breakfast table, too.

Sourdough Breakfast Recipes

Many of these breakfasts are sourdough discard recipes, so you don’t have to worry about bulk fermenting. Discard recipes usually require other leavening agents, so make sure you have baking soda and baking powder on hand.

If the recipe requires bulk fermenting, I start the dough right before bed (make sure to feed your starter earlier in the day) and finish it in the morning.

Also, you can make the dough in advance and store it in the fridge for a few days if you want to get a head start!

Tips for Easy Sourdough Breakfasts

  • You can long-ferment any discard recipe by leaving out the salt, baking soda, and/or baking powder. Let the dough ferment at room temperature for 8-12 hours or 24 hours in the fridge, mix in the salt and leaveners, and follow the recipe as usual.
  • The first step is building a healthy starter. If you don’t have one yet, learn how to make your own sourdough starter. I promise it’s easier than you think!
  • You can use active or inactive sourdough starter for any recipe. If you are bulk fermenting, active starter will work faster.

Helpful Sourdough Tools

Luckily, sourdough doesn’t require a bunch of fancy tools. But there are a few sourdough essentials that make things easier, especially when you’re baking breakfast before the coffee kicks in.

Stand Mixer: A stand mixer saves time and effort in the kitchen. I love my KitchenAid bowl-lift stand mixer.

Whisk: A Danish dough whisk makes mixing batter and dough much easier.

Mixing Bowls: I use a variety of bowls, but I usually prefer a 9″ bowl or my 12″ Ohio stoneware bowl.

Dutch Oven: Not only is a Dutch oven great for baking bread, but it’s also perfect for frying sourdough donuts (or sourdough fried chicken for chicken and waffles).

Baking Sheet: Depending on what I’m making, I use large stainless steel baking sheets or a stone bar pan.

Wire Rack: Some baked goods need a little time to cool before serving. I use this foldable 3-tier cooling rack to save space.
