As the holiday season approaches, I’ve been thinking about simple, thoughtful handmade gifts, and nothing feels as personal as sharing a homemade sourdough gift with loved ones.

Last year, I shared sourdough starter gift sets with my baking friends, and they were a hit! The gift baskets looked so cute that I couldn’t wait to create an updated version for this year.

To make it easier, I put together this guide on how to gift sourdough, from beautifully packaged loaves to sweet baked treats, and even to gifting starter.

I usually lean on family favorites like no-knead sourdough and cinnamon rolls. But you can easily gift any sourdough bread or treat your loved ones enjoy!

Handmade gifts like these are truly meaningful, and your recipients will appreciate the care and love baked into every bite.

Why Gift Sourdough

Homemade: Homemade gifts are not only meaningful, but they also create lasting memories.

Unique: Sourdough takes skill and practice, so sharing your baking skills makes your gift one-of-a-kind.

Practical: Gifted sourdough is useful (everyone has to eat), enjoyed right away, and won’t be forgotten on a shelf or end up in a landfill.

Budget-Friendly: With simple ingredients and packaging, these homemade gifts don’t have to cost a lot.

Meaningful: It takes time to bake, assemble, and curate something handmade, which recipients truly appreciate.

    Tips for Printing

    • Paper – Use high-quality printer paper to ensure your printable looks great. I used cardstock.
    • Size – This printable is designed for a regular 8.5″x11″ sheet of paper. Be sure your printer is set to the correct size.
    • Quality – Most printers have a “best” quality setting. Make sure you select this option for the best resolution.
    • Color – Make sure your printer is set to color or black-and-white, depending on your preferences.

    Gifting Sourdough Bread

Sourdough bread is one of my favorites to give to others. It has versatile uses, and friends and family are always impressed by homemade bread.

Batch Bake: Bake several loaves at a time to save time and effort. For crusty boules, if you don’t have multiple Dutch ovens, try an open bake with steam (check out my bread bowls recipe for instructions).

Cold Proof: Make the dough up to 3 days in advance, refrigerate it after the bulk ferment, and bake it the morning of gift-giving.

Make Smaller Loaves: Try baking half-sized loaves, which allow you to gift more, include different flavors, and make the most of your ingredients.

Add Seasonal Inclusions: Customize the bread for the recipient by adding their favorite inclusions, such as sourdough cranberry walnut bread or sourdough jalapeño cheddar bread.

Decorative Packaging: I often like to use these kraft cake boxes and paper bread bags. If you can sew (which I, unfortunately, cannot), you can also package it in a handmade fabric bread bag. Don’t forget to add ribbon and a gift tag for a finishing touch.

Pair with Condiments: I love going the extra mile and adding an herb butter, strawberry jam, or apple butter to the gift presentation.

    Gifting Sourdough Discard Treats

If you’re like me, you probably have plenty of sourdough discard, which can be used to make really delicious gifts, such as muffins, scones, or even my one-bowl sourdough carrot cake (a favorite all year long in our house).

Bake Once, Gift Twice: Make one large batch of treats and divide them among multiple gifts. For example, one sourdough coffee cake can be divided into 16 slices.

Pair with a Small Gift: Sweet treats pair perfectly with a mug and a few tea bags or hot cocoa packs and homemade marshmallows.

Decorative Packaging: Have fun dressing up your packaging. Arrange the treats into wicker baskets, add bows and bells, and include a sweet handmade card. For individual treats like cupcakes or cinnamon rolls, I like to use these mini-cake tins.

Get Creative: Rather than a regular loaf of babka, shape it into a wreath. Or turn your cinnamon rolls into a stunning snowflake. I show how to do both of these easy techniques in my DIY sourdough gifts video on YouTube.

    Gifting Sourdough Starter

A sourdough starter gift set feels magical because you’re giving them the ability to bake again and again long after the holidays end.

Make a Gift Set: I love to make a DIY starter set. Not only does it provide everything they need to get started (pun intended), it also teaches them how to feed and care for their starter.

Give Discard: Collect the discard and package it in individual, labeled jars. Pair with instructions and a handmade card for a truly unique gift.

Pair with Starter Tools: Include a wooden spoon, flour scoop, or cute tea towel for a beginner’s baking kit.

Give with a Sack of Flour: Add a bag of flour and a note that says, “Just add water and patience.”

    Make-Ahead & Storage Tips

Cool To Room Temp: Before freezing or storing, allow baked items to reach room temperature to avoid excess moisture from condensation.

Freeze: Wrap the cooled baked goods tightly in plastic wrap and seal in a freezer bag. They will keep for weeks and maintain their flavor in the freezer.

Discard Treats: If the treats will sit out more than a day or two, freeze them first and deliver chilled so they stay fresh longer.

Double-Duty Dough: Batch prep one type of dough and use it multiple ways. For instance, you can use half of the cinnamon roll dough to make sourdough snowflakes, and the other half for individual cinnamon rolls.

    Packaging and Presentation Tips

Packing Ideas: Creative packaging makes your loaves and treats feel extra special. Place treats in decorative baskets or festive containers, wrap bread loaves in a seasonal tea towel tied with twine. Package the discard in glass jars with handmade labels.

Decorations: For a personal touch, add ribbons, twine, rafia, and seasonal embellishments to make your gift extra beautiful.

Tags: Include a handwritten note with instructions or a sweet message, or use my printable tags for hassle-free gifting.
