When I started making sourdough, I had no idea what I needed. But over the years, I have curated a kitchen filled with useful tools for crafting beautiful and delicious sourdough.
Now, if you landed on this blog post because you are shopping for a sourdough enthusiast, but you aren’t one yourself, don’t worry. I’ll walk you through this! You don’t need to know what all of this stuff is.
And by the time you are done, you might start baking sourdough yourself (I hope!).
There are gift ideas for each stage of the sourdough process. So, you can shop for beginners to advanced bakers. Or you can choose gifts to enhance any part of the sourdough journey.
Gifts for Making a Sourdough Starter
The first step to becoming a sourdough aficionado is to make a sourdough starter. Really, you don’t need much to make a starter, just some flour, a few jars, and a couple of inexpensive tools listed below.
For a simple and cute gift idea, check out my sourdough starter gift set guide. It includes free printable gift tags, giftable instructions, and a helpful feeding chart.
- Mason jars: A few mason jars are helpful for making and storing sourdough starter. I prefer using quart mason jars.
- Spurtle: Fitting a large spoon inside of a jar can be tricky. A wood spurtle makes stirring a thick starter easy, especially inside a jar. A spurtle is a lesser-known sourdough tool, so this is a handy gift many bakers haven’t heard of.
- Kitchen scale: Converting cups to grams is one of the parts that trips up new sourdough bakers. A waterproof kitchen scale eliminates the guesswork.
- Mason jar cover: Sourdough starter needs to be covered with a breathable lid. A cute mason jar cover adds an aesthetic touch. If you purchase the one listed here, I recommend the X-small size.
Gifts for Making Perfect Dough
Though all steps of the sourdough process are important, most of the magic happens in the dough. These are helpful tools for making, bulk fermenting, and proofing sourdough bread dough.
- Bowl: I love this 12″ stoneware mixing bowl for bulk fermenting my dough. It’s large enough to bulk-prep sourdough pizza dough and double batches of no-knead sourdough bread.
- Batard baskets: A batard is an oval-shaped loaf of bread. A 10″ batard proofing basket is a standard size that works for most rustic sourdough bread recipes. Sourdough bakers use this basket to hold the dough’s shape while proofing.
- Banneton baskets: Banneton baskets create a circle-shaped loaf of bread. This 9″ banneton basket set is my go-to for making sourdough bread. Like the batard baskets, these are used to support the dough while proofing.
- Proofing box: The Brod & Taylor proofing box & slow cooker is hands-down one of the best tools I have for making sourdough. It creates humid, warm conditions for controlling how quickly your sourdough ferments. As a bonus, it doubles as a slow cooker. It’s collapsible, so it doesn’t require much storage space. Check out my full review of the Brod and Taylor for more info.

For sure, the KitchenAid 7-qt bowl lift stand mixer is my favorite. It can hold large batches of dough, doesn’t struggle with kneading, and doesn’t “walk” across the counter. I also appreciate that it has a strap for wrapping up and tidying the cord.

Make sure your sourdough enthusiast has the right tools for baking. A Dutch oven, for example, is the key to crusty sourdough bread.
What is great about some of these gifts is that they are versatile in the kitchen. So they can be used for making amazing sourdough bread and more!
- Lodge Dutch oven: The Lodge combo cooker is one of my most used kitchen tools for scratch cooking. It’s perfect for baking, and the lid and base are separate skillets, so it’s like getting three pieces of cookware for the price of one. Also, this classic cast iron Dutch oven is oven-safe at 500° F, which is perfect for baking sourdough.

The self-basting lid holds more moisture than other Dutch ovens, creating a fuller, bouncier loaf of bread. Many Dutch ovens with metal lids are not rated for high temperatures, but the Staub lid is oven-safe up to 500° F.
- Loaf pan: I use this Pampered Chef stone bread pan to make sourdough sandwich bread and maple oatmeal bread. It’s my favorite loaf pan. It bakes evenly, and it’s easy to wipe clean.
- Bread lame: A bread lame is a razor designed for scoring dough and making beautiful designs. I prefer this lame because it can be used as a straight or curved blade.
Sourdough Accessories
This gift guide for sourdough bakers lays out the essentials, but this section has my favorite accessories. These aren’t necessary for making sourdough bread, but they also make it a little easier and fun.
- Danish dough whisk: These handy whisks are used for mixing up thick batter and dough. I use my Danish dough whisk to combine dough ingredients and incorporate inclusions (did someone say chocolate chips?). I also love them because they keep my hands clean.
- Bread bags: These linen bread bags with plastic lining keep sourdough sandwich bread and other enriched breads fresh. The lining retains moisture, the drawstring closure maintains a little necessary airflow to prevent mold, and the linen cover makes it aesthetically pleasing on the counter. It’s really the perfect bread bag.

- Bow knife: A sourdough knife like this one makes slicing crusty rustic sourdough easy. The serrated blade cuts through the crust, and the bow shape helps create even slices.
