Fall is finally here, and there is no place I’d rather be than in the kitchen. Well, really, I’d like to be in a kitchen…in a mountain cabin surrounded by autumn-colored trees.

It was 90° F on the first day of fall here in southeastern North Carolina. So, if there is one thing I know about this time of year, it’s that if you want it to feel like fall, start in the kitchen.

A well-stocked kitchen is the key to simplified scratch cooking, and having the right kitchen tools is critical. I recently published my favorite kitchen tools for scratch cooking because I know the right tools can reshape how we cook.

But as the seasons change, so do our go-to ingredients and supplies.

With fall festivities, busy school schedules, and rapidly approaching holidays, it’s easy to mentally note what you need the next time you run to the grocery store. The hard part is remembering what that mental note actually was.

I can’t be the only one who thinks of great ideas at a red light and forgets them by the time it turns green, right?

To help you ease into the season and enjoy the sweetness of autumn in the kitchen, I’ve created a free printable fall kitchen essentials checklist.

Here’s to a well-stocked pantry and the coziest fall ever!

    About the Checklist

Think of this checklist as a fall capsule wardrobe for your kitchen. It’s the basics and necessities.

Still, I always recommend keeping track of the ingredients and tools you actually use. That way, you can create a pantry inventory list and hone the right kitchen tools for you and your family.

Remember, you might work in your kitchen, but your kitchen should also work for you. Knowing what you will actually use makes cooking easier and more fun.

And as an added bonus, it also prevents food waste because you are making goodies that you love.

    Tips for Printing the Checklist

    • Size – These printables are designed for a regular 8.5″x11″ sheet of paper. Be sure your printer is set to the correct size.
    • Color – The ink-friendly version, of course, can be printed in black and white. If you prefer the color version, set your printer to full color.
    • Paper – Use high-quality printer paper to ensure your printable looks great, especially if you plan on displaying the full-color version.
    • Quality – Most printers have a “best” quality setting. Make sure you select this option for the best resolution.

Prepping for Fall in the Kitchen

    • Check your spices – Double-check the expiration dates on your fall spices, especially the ones you haven’t used since last fall, like pumpkin spice. Most spices and herbs have a pretty long shelf life, but after a while, they lose their flavor and potency.
    • Refill your dry goods – I like to keep my dry goods and pantry essentials in airtight containers. While stocking up and checking your pantry inventory, refill your containers so they are ready to go.
    • Clean out – Make room for seasonally appropriate pantry items. Use up any summery goods so they don’t go to waste. Fridge and pantry cleanouts are a great opportunity to make sheet-pan meals and one-pot dinners.
    • Freezer raid – Make room for seasonally appropriate freezer meals, such as soups and stews. Cuban garbanzo stew and veggie soup are two of my fall faves.
    • Recipe organization – Revisit any of your fall favorites. I’ve found the best way to organize them is by adding them to your Pinterest boards.
    • Baking supplies – Make sure you have the right tools readily available. Dig out your loaf pans and cookie sheets because baking is one of the best parts of fall.
